OUR STORY

Providence Church formed with the desire to make the gospel become alive in Omaha, Nebraska. Our co-pastors Jared Kliewer and Andrew Rutten have hearts for the church to be one that celebrates diversity, actively loves people, cares deeply about Omaha, and lives in awe of God. Jared and Andrew's prayers for Providence are that God would continue to lead people to Himself and that God’s people would live all of life with the presence of God.

CO–PLANT

Providence is a co-plant by Christ Community Church and Citylight Church in the spring of 2017.

HISTORY

In the summer of 2016, God began moving to develop a new partnership for the glory of His kingdom. Andrew Rutten was the college pastor at Citylight Omaha and Jared Kliewer was the college pastor at Christ Community Church but both felt God’s call to see and make disciples in a new part of Omaha. In the fall of 2016, they came together, talked about God’s call on their lives, and realized that God’s hand was leading them to plant a new church. They were to bring the heart of the gospel to the heart of the city—then South Midtown.

Through the fall of 2016, Providence began prayer gatherings. In January of 2017, we launched 5 City Groups to build community and form the official core of the church. City Groups grew and we began worship gatherings at The Pella, a former Lutheran church turned event venue in Omaha’s Blackstone District. Then, on September 10, 2017, with over 8 City Groups living on mission, Providence launched regular Sunday worship gatherings at The Pella.

After two years at The Pella in Blackstone, the Lord directed Providence to move the University of Nebraska-Omaha’s Thompson Alumni Center (TAC) in October of 2019. Providence gathered at the TAC until March of 2020 when the COVID-19 pandemic closed the TAC’s doors to events over 25 people. Providence then transferred to online gatherings where we could still worship our King together even though we were scattered in our homes across the city.

On June 21, 2020, Citylight Omaha graciously opened their Midtown location for Providence to gather on Sundays at 5 p.m. Then, on June 6, 2021, the TAC re-opened to allowing Providence gatherings inside its building.

In June of 2023, we now have our own space at the Center Mall (1941 S 42nd St, Suite 385) for both our offices and Sunday gatherings. To learn more about our Sunday gatherings, click here.

Our wonderful history reminds us that even in beginning stages, transition, or global pandemics, our God is faithful. He has always provided a space for His children to meet, and even provided the technology when we physically were unable to gather so that His children can proclaim His name and share His good news. We serve a glorious God. Praise Him for the work He is doing in and through His church to bring His people to Himself.
